Drunkenness.—Donald McLellan was fined ss, or 24 hours' hard labour in default.

Alleged Assault. — The case against Edward Trevor, charged with assaulting Philip Sanford, was again adjourned for a week.—Sergeant.Kelly said that it would be at least another fortnight before Sanford would be able to leave the Hospital.—Bail was enlarged. Stealing Newspapers.—Two boys named Andrew McEwan and John Stephens were charged with stealing lifly " Herald " newspapers, valued at 8s 4d. The papers belonged to Walter Graham, a news runner, who had left them in a bag on a doorstep in Union-street.—McEwan pleaded guilty to taking some of the papers, but .Stephens pleaded not guilt}'.—After hearing the evidence of a number of news-runners Hi* Worship decided that there was no direct evidence against Stephens, and discharged him with a caution.—McEwan, who has already been to gaol once before, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. A Serious Charge. — A young man named Thomas Fitzpatrick appeared to answer a charge of criminal assault upon a girl under sixteen years of age.—Mr Krookh'eld appeared for the prosecution, instructed by the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, and asked for a remand of seven days. — The prisoner oflered no objection, and was remanded accordingly, after the evidence of Constable Evans, who arrested him at Mangapai, had been taken. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £50 each.

Maintenance.—ln the case of Thomas Hughes, charged with failing to comply with an order for the support of his three children in an industrial school, His Worship decided to remit the arrears, and made a fresh order for the payment of 7s 6d a week.—John Wm. Wilson was remanded till to-morrow on a charge of failing to comply with an order for maintenance.—Alexander Gamble was charged with failing to comply with an order for the support of his father. He said he had just come out of the Hospital, had no money, and was still unable to work. His Worship adjourned the case for a month.— Albert E. Palmer was sentenced to two weeks' imprisonment for disobedience of an order, warrant to be suspended a week to give him an opportunity of paying tip the arrears.
