GENERAL COPPINGER.
Brigfulier-Genernl John Coppingcu* commands the American force that has left Tampa to assist in the invasion of Cuba at Puerto Rico. He entered the United States army in IS6I. He was appointed captain of the Fourteenth United Stales Infantry in ISGI, and subsequently commanded the Fifteenth New York Cavalry. He was highly commended by Generals Sheridan, Torbert, Wright, and Custer for gallantry in the Held, and was several times wounded, notably at the second battle of Bull Hun, where he was left for dead on the bat-tle-field, lie participated in more than thirty of the seveve battles of the war, and was breveted not. only for gallantry in that war but also for conspicuous acts of bravery in operations against 'hostile Indians. As the son-in-law of Elaine, it was supposed that Coppinger would be promoted over the heads of older men by President Harrison, but his final recommendation for generalship was postponed until shortly before President Cleveland's retirement in 1896. He acted gallantly during the war and was breveted for services at Trevilian and Cedar Creek, while after the war he was breveted colonel for bravery
and energy in command of troops operating against hostile Indians in IaGO, 1807, and 18CS.
