The returns of births and deaths for the city of Auckland and surrounding boroughs for the month of May have been completed by the registrar. These show that during that period the births in Auckland numbered 73, and the deaths 50. In Birkenhead, birth I, deaths 2 ; in Devonport, births 8, deaths 2 ; in Newmarket, births 0, deaths 2; in Newton, births 10, death 1 ; in Parnell, births 10, death 1. Railway revenues for the colony for the four weeks curled April 30th totalled £131,521 and expenditure £72,071. The North Island lines produced £50,140 and their expenditure was £29,755. The items are :— hawakawa, : Revenue £153, expenditure £203. Whangarci: K«venue £1,280, expenditure £431. Kaihu : Hevcnne£Bl4, expenditure £333. Auckland : Revenue £13,842, expenditure £7,834. Wellington, Napier and New Plymouth : Revenue £34,050, expenditure £20,951.
