In the Supreme Court on May 30th W. Stiles, charged with embezzlement of money amountng to £600, the property of the Canterbury Farmers' Co-operative Association, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. William Warner, for theft, got 12 raontlis' imprisonment.

The body ef a newly-born infant was found dead in bed in a house at Carterton with its throat cub on May 26 and a young unmarried woman named Madeline Cross, daughter of a Wellington resident, was arrested in connection with the outrage. When the case came before the Supreme Court the Grand Jury returned no bill and the accused was discharged.

The mail steamer Mariposa, which arrived from 'Frisco yesterday, numbered among its passengers Detective Maddern and his prisoner, Dr. Arthur Herbert Orpen, who is charged with the murder of Susan McCallum. Dr. Orpen travelled aa a steerage passenger. Soon after tho steamer's arrival at Quay-street wharf this morning, Dr. Orpen was taken ashore and lodged in the High-street lock up, to be brought before the Police Court later on. The Court was crowded when the case was called, and Dr. Orpen appeared in the dock. He looked a good deal older than when last in Auckland, and was by no means so well-trimmed as of yore. He still had on the coat which he used to wear in Auckland, easily recognisable by the astrachan collar and cuffs. The prisoner was charged that on December 25th 1897, he did at Auckland kill and murder ona Susan Harriet Campbell McCallum. lU made no reply when the charge was read, Mr McAlister, instructed by the Crown Prosecutor (Mr J. A. Tole), appeared for the prosecution, while Messrs Theo. Cooper and F. E. Baume were present on behalf of the accused. Messrs D. G. McDonnell and J. Leydon, J.P.s, were on the Benoh, An adjournment till Tuesday was asked for by Mr McAlister. The accused had only arrived that morning, and there had been no opportunity for either side to go into the facts of the caso. "We have no objection to a remand," said Mr Cooper, "subject of course to our ight to have a, further remand if we require one." The case was accordingly adjourned till Tuesday.
