THE IRISH CENTENARY.

COMMEMORATION IN AUCKLAND.

To-day the Irish centenary of 1798 was commemorated locally by Irish citizens. This morning a solemn Bequiem Mass was held at St. Patrick's Cathedral for the repose of the souls of those who died in! the rebellion 100 years ago. The Irish rebellion of 1798 was the demand of Roman Catholics and Ulster Presbyterians' for political liberties long enjoyed by Irish Protestants. More than 100,000 lives are»believed to have been sacrificed. The cost, including the value of property destroyed, has been estimated at more than £10,000,000. According to Lord Castlereagh 137,350 troops were employed. The solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated at 9 a.m. The Rev. Father Kehoe celebrated the mass, Dr. Egan being deacon, and Rev. Father Buckley sub-deacon, while His Lordship Bishop Leiiihan was president at the throne. In the sanctuary were Revs. Fathers Gallagher, Brodie and Croke. There was a full choir present under Mr Hiscocks.

At St. Patrick's Cathedral last night His Lordship spoke on patriotism in general, and he referred to the Irish rebellion and its cause.

To-night a commemorative gathering takes place in St. Benedict's Hall. A first class vocal and instrumental programme has been prepared for the occasion. Bishop Lenihan will also give an address. The Rev. Father Kehoe will sing " The Memory of the Dead."
