For the Derby eighteen started. Disraeli, the favourite, held the leading position, but collapsed at the hill. Batt and Wantage going strongly then assumed leading positions, Avhile Jeddah, Avho up to this joint had. been running in the last division, began.to come.up. A quarter of a mile from home, in company with Dieudonne and Dunlop, Jeddah challenged Batt 200. yards from . the winning post, and after a game struggle Jeddah Avon by thiee-quarters of a length. Time, 2min 47sec. .' ! :
.O. Madden rode fche Avinner. Ifc Avas Mr W. J. Larnaeh's first.attempt to Avin the Derby. He bought Pilgrimage (dam of Jeddah) for 160 guineas, and he was unaAvare afc tlie time that she was in foal.
