A Spanish officer at present on- a visit here has been interviewed. He •was asked ;whether there ■>' was any truth. in",the - rumoxirvthat d Spanish vessel was seen off Auckland. He replied that he did ilot think it unlike,ly. - There ..were American mail steamers plying between Sydney and San . Francisco, and between San Francisco and Japan, usually carrying a large quantity of specie, and he thought it very. likely : that Spain would take advantage of that and make Manila a base from which to prey on American commerce in the Pacific. The. points of these attacks would naturally be, he said, somewhat hi the neighbourhood of the ports of departure of these vessels.
