Arthur Croft, an elderly man, acting as schoolmaster and " telephone agent at Pohui, was found dead in bed yesterday. The body was brought to town for inquest. Deceased had been suffering from locomotor ataxia.
The band contest opening to-morrow is arousing considerable interest. The Wai hi and Gisborne men arrived this morning. Southern bandsmen reach here by tonight's express.
WELLINGTON, this day.
The. Government have arranged to have a squad from each of the local rifle corps instructed in the use of the Maxim guns recently imported.
INVERCARGILL, this day
An old member of the police force, J. W. Ede, ex-detective, died on Saturday from dropsy ; aged 54 years.:
