THE WHARF FIRE AND REFUND OF DUTY.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Upon enquiry at the Customs Department as to the refund of duty paid by the consignees of the Rangatira in the disastoms fire which destroyed the shed and its contents on Queen-street Wharf, we are told that the Commissioner of Customs has not yet authorised the joayment of this money, and at present there is no prospect of any immediate redress. We all know that tjjis money was voted by Parliament on the Supplementary Estimates, What can be the cause of the delay? Is it reasonable or just that the Government should thus act in view of the precedent in Dunedin, apart from the common fairness of the restitution in itself? —I am, etc., IMPORTER.
