BISHOP NEVILLE'S VISIT TO LAMBETH.

SUBSTANTIAL GRANTS.

DUNEDIN, Tuesday.

The Anglican Diocesan Synod was opened to-day. Bishop Neville, m his address, after referring to the work of the Lambeth Conference, stated that on behalf of the diocese he had obtained a vote of £500 for a See House from the Societf for the Propagation of the Gospel; the Society also setting aside £1,000 from the Marriot bequest towards the further endowment of the Wardenship of Selwyn College. From the Colonial Bishopric Council he had obtained a grant of £500 for the See House, and from the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge an equal sum, making £1,500 in all. From the last-named society he had also obtained grants towards the erection of four new churches. The Bishop expressed satisfaction at the work of his commissary during his absence, and, in referring with regret to the death of the Rev. T. L. Stanley, be said be regretted to find that there were clergy whose stipends from all parts of their districts amounted to about what a single individual might pay for a servant. He earnestly beseecned churchmen to see that this injury to the cause, and disgrace to the community, was speedily remedied.
