CHESS CONGRESS.
The games in the second round which were unfinished when we went to press yesterday resulted in wins for H. H. Smith and Mellor from Grierson and F. Smith respectively, while the game between Wood and L. P. Smith was drawn.
The third round of the contest was commenced last evening and was concluded this morning. Grierson and Lelievre drew on the 65th move, and H. H. Smith and Jowitt on the 55th. Howe Avas defeated by L. P. Smith, resigning on his 32nd move. J. Wood defeated Mellor, J. Edwards defeated F. Smith, the latter resigning on his 45th move. Pleasants was defeated by H. James in 54 moves. Barnes received a bye. The fourth round was begun this afternoon and will be continued this evening. The players are: Wood v. Jowitt, Grierson v. Howe, Lelievre v. F. Smith, H. H. Smith v. Barnes, James v. L. P. Smith, Pleasants v. Mellor, Edwards a bye.
