THE RIDER OF THE CUP WINNER.

Joseph Sceats, who rode A-ntares to victory in the Auckland Cup, is 18 years of age, and was born at Gisborne. He weighs

about 7st 31b, and it is only this last four years that he has taken to riding. Remarkable to relate, lie is in the service of J. Chaafe, senr., and personally attends to St. Paul. Questioned- after'the race, he said that he got away fourth or fifth, and that two furlongs from home he did not think that he had any possible chance of beating St. Paul, who was going great guns, Coming to the turn for home his mount lay third. He then commenced to make his run, and to his surprise caught St. Paul at the distance. He sat down and rode all he knew and thought Antares won by a neck.
