CHESS CONGRESS.
The New Zealand Chess Congress was opened yesterday morning in the Harbour Board buildings. A meeting was held in the morning to decide upon the hours during which play should be carried on. It was decided that the hours should be from 9.30 till one in the morning, from 2.30 to 5.30 in the afternoon, and from 7.30 to 10.30 in the evening. The first meeting for play commenced at 2.30 p.m., when, according to custom, players were matched against competitors from their own Club or district. The first game to terminate was that played between Mr Barnes, the present champion, representing the Wellington Working Men's Club, and Mr James, of the Wellington Chess Club. At the 23rd move Mr James, through an oversight, lost his queen and resigned. The game between Messrs H. R. Smith and L. P. Smith, both of the GlenVar Club, resulted in a draw. Mr Jowitt scored a win from Mr Lelievre, the Secretary of the Auckland Chess Club. Mr Pleasants, of Rangitikei, beat Mr F. H. Smith, of Waimea North. The game between Messrs Grierson and Wood, both of the Auckland Chess Club, Avas drawn on the 73rd move.
