GOLD RETURNS.

INCREASE FOR YEAR £58,721. DECEMBER OUTPUT £40,411. The returns from the various sections of the Hauraki goldfields for the past year are satisfactory in that they show an increase of £58,721 6s 6d, the total output for the 12 months being£392,33B lis 9d, as near as can he calculated, for the official returns for the present quarter are not yet completed. There are also one or two small returns yet to come in before the year closes, the total output for 1896 at a similar date was £333,616 13s 6d. The most interesting feature of the returns is the wonderful increase shown in the output from the Upper Thames mines, which lias more than compensated for the falling off where batteries have been pulled down to make way for more modern plants. Another interesting fact is that the return for the present month is the largest to date, and that for the last quarter of the year is also the biggest for 1897.
