PERSONAL.

Mr John R. Martin, of Dunedin, has been presented with a gold medal, forwarded through the Collector of Customs, from the President of the United States iv recognition of bravery displayed in rescuing the crew of the American ship Patrician.

On the occasion of her approaching marriage a very handsome present was made on Dec. 20th to Miss Olive Russell by the teachers and officers of St. John's Wesleyan Sunday-school. The presentation was made at the residence of Mr Horsley, the superintendent of tlie school. It consisted of a beautifully adorned silver teapot. Mr Horsley in a happy speech made the presentation and Mr Bartley also seconded.

On December 21st Dr. McArthur, M.A., LL.D., head-master of Queen's College, Ponsonby Road, was given a banquet at the Metropolitan Hotel by the present and past pupils of the College. The doctor is retiring from the teaching profession to resume the practice of law, he baying been a barrister of tlie Supreme Court of New Zealand for the past ten years. Mrs Gallagher served up a capital repast, the menu being choice and varied. Mr W. dagger (an old pupil) presided. After the toast of "The Queen and tlie Royal Family " had been honoured, the Chairman presented Dr. McArthur with a handsome illuminated, address printed at the "Star" Office. The Chairman referred to the inlluence which Dr. McArthur had wielded over the pupils, and his earnest endeavours to lit them for the battle of life. Mr G. D. Ingali proposed the toast " The Guest of tlie Evening." He said he was glad he had placed his sons at the college. He wished Dr. McArthur every success in his legal career, and that with his wife he might be prosperous and happy. The toast was heartily drunk, accompanied with musical honours. Dr. McArthur received an ovation on rising to reply. He sa d that he thanked them all for the kindly words about himself, and also about his wife. He hoped in the legal profession to hold as high a position as he had done in the teaching world.
