Bluff—December 15— Arrived: Alexa, barque, from Maiden Island. THE GOTHIC. Wellington, December 13. — The s.s. Gothic arrived from London at 6 a.m. today. She had a wonderfully (smooth passage, and a larger passenger list than any previous trip. At the Cape she landed 10S and embarked S3 passengers. She brings 243 passengers for New Zealand, amongst whom are Bishop and Mrs Neville and Mr and Mrs Roberts of Dunedin. Mr Roberts' health is quite restored. Messrs Huddart, Parker, and Co. are getting plans prepared for a" new steamer to replace the Tasmania in the intercolonial trade. The new vessel will be similar in design to the Wcstralia.

H.M. surveying- ship Penguin arrived from Suva on Nov. 28. Sbe left Suva on tbe 29th Oct. and experienced line weather on the trip. On arriving- in the Gulf a heavy fog came down and tlie Penguin anchored oil' Ksngitoto till it lifted, making the harbour at noon. The Penguin left for Hobart on December 2nd. Her officers are :—Captain, A. Field; First Lieutenant, Frederick C. C. Pasco ; Navigating Lieutenant, J. A. Waugh; Lieutenants, G. A. Nares, A. W. Lowis, and C. K.W.Brewis; Paymaster, J. Murray ; Surgeon, Morris C. Longford; Engineer, Win. Toop.

The New Zealand Shipping Co.'s steamer Waikato arrived from London on Dec. 4th after a lough trip of GO days 22 hours. Mr J. J. Cameron, the second officer, reports : The s.s. Waikato left Royal Albert Docks, London, at 5 p.m. Saturday, 2nd October, and experienced moderate weather and easterly winds to Teuerifi'e, arriving there on the afternoon of 10th inst. At midnight proceeded on again and had fine weather to the Equator which was crossed on Tuesday, 19th October. The S.E. Trades were fresh and accompanied by a head sea. Signalled to the Cape of Good Hope signal station on Monday, Ist November. From this time until rounding Tasmania a continual succession of gales were encountered. Special mention may be made of the 17th November, on which day a furious gale was blowing from the S.W., and the sea literally mountainous and seeming to threaten to engulf the ship. The Waikato, however, behaved splendidly. On the 27th inst. at 8 p.m. passed the Eddystone Bock, Tasmania. For the next two days a fine south-westerly breeze was encountered which eventually fell light and hauled to the south-east with an almost calm sea. The North Cape was passed at noon of the 3rd of December, Little .Barrier Island at 4 o'clock nevt morning, and arrived at wharf at 9 o'clock. The Waikato remained here for a fortnight, and then proceeded to Wellington.

The Mission yacht Southern Cross arrived from Melanesia on December 19th. Captain Huggett reports : The Southern Cross left Auckland on July 19th for Norfolk Island, where we arrived on the 25th, left for • the Islands on the 29th with the Revs. T. C. Cullwick, Ferrell, W. P. Wilson, Dr. Williams and about 40 Meianesians; arrived at Arago (Pentecost) 4th August, picked up Bishop Wilson and called at the various stations in the group, left Mr Cullwick at Santa Maria 14th August, called at Torres on the 15th, left Dr. Williams and Rev. Ferrell at Santa Cruz on the 20th, arrived at Florida on the 23rd, from there back to Maytata, San Cristoval, Gaudalcana and Ysabel, left Florida 7th September, left Mota on tbe 13th, Vila (N.H.)on the 22nd, arrived at Norfolk Island on the^2Sth, landed the

Dr. Williams and the Rev. Mr Ferrell on the 25th, San Cristoval 27th, Scota on the 30th, left.the Solomons for Torres on the] 4th November, arrived at the latter place on the 12th, cleared out from the islands lon the 26th with the Revs. Comins, Culljwick, Robin, Dr. Williams, Ferrell and j6O Melanesians, arrived at Norfolk Island |on the sth December, left on the 6th for Auckland, fell in with an easterly gale which lasted 8 days. On the 15th the wind fell light and remained so the re- ' mainder of the trip.
