THE INQUIRY.

WELLINGTON, December 15.

Tlie inquiry into the striking of the ship Nelson in Cook Straits on November 27tu, concluded yesterday afternoon. The decision of 'the Court was to the effect that the damage to the Nelson was caused by error of judgment on the part ot Captain Perriam, the master, in keeping too close to land, in consequence of whicn the vessel struck on some rock or rocks near Tom's Rock, which error of judgment, in the opinion of the Court, amounted to "wrongful default" within the meaning of the shipping and Seamen's Act. Itf Court, therefore, suspended the captains certificate for one month and ordered him to pay the costs of the inquiry, £9 9s. i&e> judgment went on to state that lthaym,, come out in the course of this inquiry that this portion of the New Zealand coast, so much frequented by sailing vessels ana steamers/ had not been surveyed since 1852, the Court would respectfully press upon the Marine Department the urgent necessity for a new survey to detect any dangers in the bottom and to locate, as ia* as possible, sunken dangers.
