THE FLORAL FETE.

During Saturday, November 27, several thousand people found their way to Ellerslie after the shops had closed at one o'clock. Every train arrived crowded, while under the trees the slope was one mass of vehicles, anil the ground presented a very gay appearance. Mr Jmpey's band and the Newton Brass Band under Mr Trussel were in attendance and played lively selections during the afternoon. Great credit is due to the ladies and gentlemen who freely gave their time and energies to ensure the success of the fete. Mr Isidore Alexander, who took charge in the absence of Mr Tibbs, arranged the judges in various groups so as to expedite the work. Messrs Mulvaney, Edwards, Hosking, K. Watkins, and Fripp officiated in classes I to 8 : Messrs Graves Aickin, Bruford, Williamson, Yates, Baker, and Jaeka, classes 9 to 19; and Messrs Perrett, Templar, Nerli, C. Arnold, and T. Steadman, classes 20 to 39, so that when the work of judging did commence it was done expeditiously. The judges' list of awards is as follows :—

Special prizes were also given to the St Mary's Orphanage children, under the care of Mrs T. Injdis, and to the maypole children under Mrs Osmond.

Special and Original.—Japaneserickshaw Miss Stratford, and drawn by Mr C. Newton (dressed as a coolie), 1; Miss Grant, model glass engine, 2. The gymkhana arranged by the Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club was held on the lawn in front of the grandstand, and proved a great success. Mr F. W. Edwards acted as starte-. Messrs Seymour Thorne George (Vice-President of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club) and W. Speight (Secretary of the above) were judges. The other officials were : —Referees : Messrs W. B. Colbeck and A. Carrick. Stewards: Dr. Purchas, Dr. Hope Lewis, Messrs H. Tewsley, Finlayson, Holm-Biss, Hamber, C. E. Palmer, Dargaville, Prouse, C. Baker, L. Keogh, Dacre, Browne, Summerfield, Jourdain and H. Thompson. Ladies' Committee : Mesdames Haynes, Hope Lewis, Dawes, Misses Wilkins, M. Wilkins, Ilbert (Hon. Secretary). The following are the results :— Ladies, No. 1 — Bouquet race. Six

Gentlemen, No. 6 — Plank Race. — A large number of entries were received for this event, which was won by G. Henning, 1 ; P. T. Upton, 2. No. 7—Mixed Pairs.—Mr P. T. Upton and Miss Ida Thompson, 1; Master T. and Miss Lewis, 2. Ladies, No. 8, Tortoise Race.—Miss Ida Thomson, I; Miss Aicken, 2. Gentlemen, No. 10, Cigar and Umbrella Race.—E. Dargaville, 1; L. Keogh, 2. Ladies, No. 11, Ball and Bucket Race. —Miss M. Howard, 1 ; Miss A. Lewis, 2. A clever exhibit of fancy riding was given by Messrs Wilkins, of Sydney. The cycling events carried out under the auspices of the Auckland Cycle Club also took place on the lawn in front of tbe grandstand. Messrs F. S. Malcolm and E. 6. Skeates were the judges, Mr E. Nordon was the starter, Mr W. Haslam the handicapper, Mr H. Young the referee, and Mr E. G. Skeates the lion, secretary. The results were as under :—Driving Pairs' Race : G. Hyauiason and F. Chainey, driven by R. Hendry. Tortoise Race : It. Hendry,-1 ;W. Auslebrook, 2 ; G. Hyauiason, 3." Combination Pace :R. Hendry, 1; W. Auslebrook, 2 ; G. Hyauiason, 3.
