A disastrous fire occurred at Hokitika at 1.30 a.m. on Saturday, December 18th, and destroyed an important business block, comprising the premises ot Lannerman (draper), Schroder (tailor). Hall's Golden Age Hotel, the "Guardian newspaper office, Arthur (confectioner King (stationer), Evans (tailor), and Cahill (draper). All were burned to the ground The progress of the fire was stopped at Kirwan's right-of-way to the north and Skeene's to the south. The total damage estimated at £10,000. The insurances were as follows :-South British: Guardian plant, £150, building, £225, stock £o0; Arthur's shop, £25; Wshoi., £100; CabiU's shop, £50, stock, £300 ; Mrs Hall s furniture, £200. London and Lancashire : Guardian, plant, £100. New Zealand office: Guardian stock £100; Arthur, stock and plant, £1,000. Palatine : Mrs Hall, building £2o0; King, stock, £150. North British : King, stock, £150. North Queensland : Kirwan, buildin<* £150. Commercial Union -. Schroeder. dwelling £100, stock, £50, piano, £50; Mrs Ha!l, billiard table, £100 Victoria : Linnemann, building, £250; Evans bmlding, £100; Cahill, stock £300; Lloyd, ni diner £100 National: Cahill, building, S; Evans, stock, £150; Sargisom stock and furniture, £150.
