A disastrous fire occurred at Hokitika at 1.30 a.m. on Saturday, December 18th, and destroyed an important business block, comprising the premises ot Lannerman (draper), Schroder (tailor). Hall's Golden Age Hotel, the "Guardian newspaper office, Arthur (confectioner King (stationer), Evans (tailor), and Cahill (draper). All were burned to the ground The progress of the fire was stopped at Kirwan's right-of-way to the north and Skeene's to the south. The total damage estimated at £10,000.
