A BRITISH PROTECTORATE
PROPOSED
CHANGE IN THE CAPITAL
SHANGHAI, December 20.
It is stated that China has invited Great Britain to assume a protectorate over the valley of the Yang-tse-Kiaug and the Si Kiang, or West River.
The Government officials at Pekin have advised the transfer of the capital to Nankin, the capital of the Province of Kiaugsn, and the former capital of the Chinese Empire. Nankin is situated considerably further inland than Pekin, raid more to the South. It is reported that the British China, fleet will winter at Weihaiwei, a Chinese naval station on the north coast of the Shangtun Peninsula.
BERLIN, December 21
The Foreign Office profess to regard the entrance of the Russian squadron into Port Arthur as a foregone conclusion, and as a continuation of co-operation with Germany in Eastern Asia.
