Margaret Carson charged at Hokitika with causing the death of an infant child of her daughter's has been remanded till the 4th -pan, She confesses to having accidentally smothered the infant when takings home and to having buried the bod/a the river bank. The police asked fon remand to enable the body to be recoverel
William Smith, alias James Charter, was arrested at Palnierston on Nov. 15ok a charge of obtaining money and goods by false pretences. Representing himself as a man of means, it is alleged he secured the affections of a widow, to whom he was to have been married yesterday.
The Taranaki "Herald" correspondent at Pungarehu wired on Nov. 21 that at six o'clock Constable Hickman received information that a Maori woman named Kohirangi had died suddenly at Parihaka, Constable Hickraan went to Parihaka, and seeing the body, immediately concluded •it to be a case of murder. The body -was lying in a whare, with a fearful gash behind the right ear. The body had been found outside, and carried in by natives. Constable Hickman arrested tie husband of the deceased, named Enoko.
