Mr Duckworth, a Liberal, has been elected member of Parliament for the Middleton Division of Lancashire, vice Mr Thomas Fielden, deceased.

Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, Chancellor of the Exchequer, addressing the Sheffield cutlers, said he did not shrink from the task of building the Empire, although the number of countries without prohibitive tariffs became smaller each year. New has been received that the French have expelled many sympathisers with the Niger Company from Boussa. A number of Sydney gentlemen interested in meat freezing on Friday witnessed a trial of a system invented by Dr. Britton, of Christchurch. The inventor was congratulated on the result.

Captain Jones, of the warship Katoomba, has been invalided home. Captain Carter, of the Orlando, succeeds him.

Among the passengers for New Zealand by the Austral, which arrived at Albany from London on Friday, are Bishop Wallis of Wellington, and Mrs Wallis.
