T HE RACING WORLD.

[BY HIPPONA,]

IBE NE W ZEALAND CUP.

[BY HIPPONA.] nr, Ta esday next will be decided at RieYV the nicest handicap in this colony, c? to?hi New Zealand Cup. The event v^aWated in the year 1883 Avhen l„o, defeated Nonsense by a head, and Morels show since that time an Auckf bef mvned horse has won the event twice. fl£ ?o St. Hippo and Impulse This J/ar tis likely that the pme.will again y a to this provnee by the aid of Day--00111 Haria or St. Paul. The race this star,i M « a, truly interprovincial character rife provinces of Otago, Canterbury, Lke's Bay and Wellington, and the Et Coast ot the North Island are repre„tprl by equines of greater or lesser merit. 56 Sal pSnient fo? the race fell due on night, and the telegraphed list wsthat iifteen horses remain m. As aPnerallv anticipated the top-weight Eurog! Li is missing so that a dangerous ? a „d date has be£i got rid of. The field it now stands is not a strong one, and Se only two engaged who have really nmved they can get a distance are Lord &n and Haria. Daystar is now at JJtjn of the list with 9st. He showed cLe pretensions of staying in the last lyVanui Cup, but still his position of thh-d 0 placing was disputed. However, Ms winnm* performance in the Hawke's LvCud, and his second in the Napier Cup Set a weight of Bst 131b, were both "editableperformances. Some discontent L been raised among the supporters of Davstar this week owing to the accounts of the Castor horse being beaten in his gallops by^ffaria morning after morning, and for thatfreason he has lost some of his L en dfi#Repbrt, too, comes from Christchunlh"' privately that Haria is the tetter of/,'- the pair, and there the matter atfpresent remains. No mystery s urroundsfSt^ Paul. A sounder and fitter wse will not strip in the race and the adrices from Christchurch are that he has done everything asked him. So far, the took tells'us that Chaafe's horse is a nonBtaver, but I am now not inclined to place much in this, and it will be no surprise for Eie to chronicle that he has stayed the journey right out and won too. The St. lexers are noted for staying better with are, and judging from his track form at jficcarton ft would appear that St. Paul has improved in this respect. Of course the poor field of stayers in the race also increases his chance of success. The connections of Waiuku express themselves as very confident of winning. I hear he is' on the big side, and of couise this will be against him in a twomile race. He is really leniently handicapped with Sst 61b, but until he displays some ability to stay I shall leave Mm alone. Lord Rosslyn has the reputation of being one who can stay as long as a boy inacandyshop, and when we know that he has come throughhispreparationalrightand that he lias a light weight, there is everything to recommend him for this race. when he won the Dunedin Cup last autumn he carried 7st 21b. From what I bow of Epaulet it appears to me that he is a horse who is not possessed of much pace, but he may be able to stay all right. It is stated that lie was never so well as at present. With an impost of 7st 4lb, Haria got second to Nestor in the last Auckland Cup, and behind him among others were labnlist (Bst 61b), St. Paul (Sst 21b) and Daystar (7st 111b). This alone is a creditable performance, and shows that he can get to the end of the long journey. For the chances of others engaged in the race I have no fancy, and my- impression is that the vrsmer will come from Lord Rosslyn, Daystar and St. Paul. To make a more definite selection I will declare for DAYSTAR OR ST. PAUL.

ARC. SPRING MEETING.

The Spring Meeting of the Auckland Baring Club will be continued on Tuesday next (Prince of Wales' Birthday) and on, Wednesday. Weights for Tuesday's racing are due on Monday morning, and acceptances close at night by nine o'clock.

MISCELLANEOUS,

During the past week a burning question in local racing circles has been the relative merits of Daystar and Haria and their New Zealand Cup chance. The Riccarton touts state that Haria is besting his stable companion in their gallops, and altogether the first named comes here as a very strong tip. "Spectator" also makes Haria his first selection for the Cup. i learn from Napier that Defiance has ten emasculated.

'..'he Auckland Trotting Club have fixed their Summer Meeting to take place at Potter's Paddock on Wednesday 22nd, Tuesday 28th, and Thursday 30th Decemher. The big event is the Trotting Cup of lOOsovs, two miles. Nominations for all events are due with Mr C. F. Mark, on Pri'lay, 10th December. ;:e Swanson Hack Racing Club intend ti .old races on the Henderson Racecourse, vrrieh has been put into good order, on November 9th. A large programme has benn prepared.

'■ ne manner in whicli Aurum defeated Ariilierite at level weights in the V-K.C. Flying Stakes at Flemington on Thursday last goes to show that Mr Wilson's colt is just as good as his friends Kade out. It would appear that Aurum was short of a gallop before the Derby was ran, due, no doubt, to his unsoundness. This lie showed in the Melbourne Cup and later in the Flying Stakes. Of course Amberite has done a lot of racing this season and may be going off. However, all tilings equal I think Aurum is still the tetter colt of the two. The meeting of the pair of flyeis under weight for age conditions to mv mind has been really the fouureof theV.R.C. Spring Meeting. ilessrs Hunter and Nolan yesterday sold various horses the property of Mr A. Austin. The following lots were disposed o|:-Elack horse Le Roi, 25gs, W. B.
