SHOCKING FATALITY.
% A LITTLE CHILD KILLED.
A lamentable accident occurred in Chapel-street this morning, resulting in the death of a little girl named Johanna Anderson, aged one year and eight months, daughter of Mr Frank Anderson, a wharf labourer residing in Chapel-street. A loaded spring dray, belonging to Mr J. E. Wheeler, of Customs-street, and driven by James Andrew Lewis, was passing along Chapel-street at a slow walking pace, the driver walking beside the cart. As the horse was passing a dust-barrel which was standing by the pavement, the little girl Anderson, whb had been standing hidden from view behind the barrel, suddenly darted out and tripped and fell under the horse's feet. Death was instantaneous, the lower part of the skull being fractured. The driver could not see the child in time to stop the horse, as he was on the opposite side of the cart, and she was hidden from view by the barrel until she darted out and fell under the horse's head. Lewis at once picked up the child and carried her into her mother's . house. Dr. Dawson was summoned, but could only pronounce life extinct. Constable McNamara was also quickly in attendance to render assistance. An inquest was proceeding this afternoon at the Bricklayer's Arms Hotel.
