WELLINGTON, this day.
A number of natives came down from Waitara to see friends in goal, but permission was refused. They were much annoyed and held an indignation meeting in the Maori room at Parliament Buildings. The Governor leaves for Christchurch in the Tutanekai to-day. The New Zealand Natives' Association now numbers nearly 300, and is increasing each week.
vThe Trades Council passed a resolution taking exception to the Premier's statement that work people objected to the inspectors of the Labour Department receiving larger salaries than they themselves earned. They deny that it applies to Wellington, and cannot understand why any section of workers should be so contemptible as to attempt to bring all branches of labour down to one level.
Herbert Turnham was committed for trial on a charge of picking pockets in a crowd in Mercer-street outside an entertainment.
NAPIER, this day.
A four-roomed cottage owned and occupied by Mr J. Fulford was totally destroyed by fire shortly after seven o'clock this morning. The fire is supposed to have been caused by wood falling out of the fireplace. The insurance on the building is £100, and on the furniture £50 in the Norwich Union.
Services were held in the Cathedral this morning to welcome Bishop Williams on his return from England, where he attended the Lambeth Conference.
A statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the recent A. and P. Show gives a slight profit in spite of the unfavourable weather on people's day.
