WINNING JOCKEY'S ACCOUNT.
NEWS AND NOTES
(By Cable. —Press Association.)
MELBOURNE, this day
Cullinan, the rider of the Cup winner, Gaulus, interviewed, said : "I got well away and leaving the straight about ten horses were in front of me. Running along the riverside I found i was falling away from the main body and commenced to shake Gaulus up. Nearing the sheds I made a great rush up to the leaders and for a time 1 feared the elt'ort L had made had taken all out of lay mount. .Sweeping round the corner into the straight 1 lay about seventh. Through the leaders accidentally swerving outwards I managed by getting close into the rails soon to secure such a place that by making a leap 1 was able to pass Aurum on the outside. I then found Gaulus third, having The Grafter immediately ahead, with some other horse nearer the rails. The winning post now came into sight, and on getting alongside of Aurum, Gaulus seemed uncertain on his legs for a moment and lost some ground until I could get into fair swing again. I did not come level with the Grafter until very close to the finish. Then it became a neck and neck race and i won they say by half a head. Mr Forester gave me choice of riding either The Grafter or Gaulus, but as I. know more about Gaulus I stuck to him. Continuing, he said; "1 regarded Positano as sure to win before we started.
Apart from the stake Mr Forrester is reported to have won ten thousand pounds. In the Caulfield Cup Gaulus was galloped on. The injury, however, was not serious and he picked up wonderfully well since. It was only after the Caulfield Cup that Gaulus was backed in earnest. There were several other gcod winners, one of the biggest being the well-known turfite W. T.°Jones, of Bravo fame. The. "Argus" quotes Gaulus' starting price at 14 to 1, and the "Age" at 10 to 1. Outside of the stakes. Mr Forester won £10,000 on Gaulus, and Mr W. Jones, now in England, netted £5,000 by the victory. Mr Forester laid Mr J. ii Smith, the breeder of Gaulus, £1,000 to nothing. The stable connections and personal friends
won a good stake, Mr Forester being sanguine of the merits of his two candidates.
Gaulus acted well in the heavy going. Mud was so thrown up at the back of the course that Cullinan had both eyes bunged up.
The attendance is estimated at 75,000.
