CYCLING IN AUSTRALIA.

REYNOLDS WINS A CHAMPION' SHIP.

Mr E. Reynolds, of Auckland, has already been distinguishing himself jn Australia. At the amateur sports in Melbourne on October 23rd, Reynolds won the Jive mile championship of Victoria, and came second in the mile. "In the cycling side two men stood out prominently above all others (remarks an exchange). They were W. L. Park, Australian amateur champion, and E. Reynolds, amateur champion of New Zealand. The two met in the one and five miles chap pionships, and each had a win. In the mile Reynolds and Park sat at rear of the field watching each other. . At the bell the New Zealander came with |. Porta sprint, and got going at such a strong pace that he seemed to have the race well in hand at the back of the track. Park« riding beautifully, however, and though "be lost a length riding wide for the top o! the bank at the home turn, he came down the bank with a terrific sprint, and beat the New Zealander all out by a good length. It was a fine race and a brilliant finish. ( Reynolds, sore at his defeat, waited for the live mile event, and he got his revengeThere was a big field, but Park and Bey nolds watched each other, and took no heed of the others. For a number?! laps Park sat behind Reynolds. Then the visitor cleverely manoeuvred Park into the lead, and for the balance of the journey never moved.from nis wheel. Park had a friend to pace him into the last lap, and round the back and into the straight he led from Reynolds, riding ■splendidly. On the home turn the race seemed a certainty for Park, but Reynolds got in an extra ounce or two, and was soon on nearly even terms. Up the straight tnetwo fought a splendid fight, and .watn a last kick Reynolds landed his wheel home first by an inch or two. The two contests have seldom been excelled on the ground.
