VICTORIA RACING CLUB'S MEETING.

THE MELBOURNE CUP.

WON BY GAULUS.

(By Cable.—Press Association.)

MELBOURNE, Tuesday.

The V.R.C. continued their meeting today at Remington. Heavy rain fell during the previous night, and the morning broke dull and threatening. The weather partially cleared up towards noon, though occasional showers fell. A good, strong wind, with the sun shining forth brilliantly •at times, made the running track fairly good, though somewhat heavy. Despite the threatening outlook, visitors streamed down early, there being a splendid attendance, including the Governor (Lord Brassey) and suite, and the Governors of New South Wales and South Australia, a large party from Government House, and the' English cricketers. The Hon. H. C. Dangar was much annoyed at Parthenopaeus being so heavily backed for the Cup after being presumably sold, and expressed the intention of

taking Fielder off Positano, but when convinced of the bona fides of the sale he allowed matters to stand. Delaware, havinggonelame, wasscratched on the course for the Cup. M^Forrester, the trainer of Gaulus and 1 he Grafter, was the recipient of much congratulation on the dual success. The stable connections threw in fora big stake, backing both horses, but having most money on Gaulus. & J
