BOROUGH COUNCILS.

PARNELL. The ordinary meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held last evening in the Council's Chambers, Manukau Road, there being in attendance the Mayor (Mr Thornes), Messrs Briggs, Page, Fitt, Tewsley, Friend, McConnell and Cozens. Correspondence. —Mr W. Bines wrote stating that there is no drainage on the allotment next his in Avon-street. It was resolved to give the owner notice to drain the property within seven days.—Mr J. J. Boach wrote calling attention to the bad state of Cleveland Road and asking the Council to repair it. It was resolved to do the vrork. ■ • Hobson Park Road.— Messrs Buddie, Button and Co. wrote that the new Hobson Park Road was finished, and requesting the Council to take it over. Objection was taken to the state of the footpath, which in one part is a foot above the adjoining property and has no retaining wall.—lt was resolved not to take over the road till it had been.curbed and channelled and a retaining wall built where the footpath is elevated above the level of the property on the sides of the street and the crossing into Manukau Road is repaired.

Waterworks Extension.—Mr J. Boylan forwarded a plan and specification for the raterworks extension through the Rev. Davies' property. —It was resolved to submit them to the General Trust Board for approval, and to ask Mr Boylan to forward aii estimate of cost of laying the pipes. It Avas also decifled'fo call for tenders for laying the pipes, to be returnable in 14 days. . ■ Accounts.—Accounts amounting to £61 14s 9d were passed for payment. Drainage.—A Committee of the whole Councilreported that they had inspected the main drain in Portland-street, and recommended the relaying of the pipes for a distance of 45 feet.

Fire Brigade.—An account of £1 7s 6d brought up by the Fire Brigade for attendance at a fire outside the borough raised the question of the efficiency of the Brigade. The Mayor stated that it was. half an hour after the outbreak before a sufficient number of Brigade members were in attendance. He moved that the account beheld over and that Captain Cowan be asked to give his reason for the delay. Cr. Tewsley moved as an amendment that the whole question of the efficiency of the Brigade he inquired into by a committee. He referred to the petition recently presented by a number of ratepayers asking the Council to erect a room in the shed, in which a man might live, in order to be ready to raise the alarm in case of lire. The scheme was rejected, and nothing had been done to increase the efficiency of the Brigade. The amendment was lost, and the original motion was then put and carried. Cr. Friend gave notice of his intention to more for an enquiry into the Fire Brigade service at the next meeting.

NEWTON,

The ordinary meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last night, there being in attendance : Mr J. W. Shackelford (Mayor), and Crs. Stewart, Davenport, Brown, Ambury, Sexton, Somerset,- Warnock. Vaile's Railway System.—Mr J. J. Holland, M.H.E., wrote that he would be pleased to give his support to Vaile's stage system having a trial on a section of our railway. 'Kchmond Road.— The acting city Town Uerk_ wrote that the letter from the Council re gas lamps on city side of Richmond Road had been referred to the Streets Committee for consideration at tet allocation of lamps.—Keceived. Lamp.-Mr M. Casey, of Great North Koad, asked that a certain lamp be removed to a more convenient place.—Referred to the Streets Committee with power toact.

Bonfires.—On the motion of Cr. Davenport, it .was resolved that three members of the Fire Brigade be on duty on the night of sth November, to prevent bonfires being lit near houses, and to take other steps for safety of buildings in the borough.
