TO CORRESPONDENTS.

Calendar of Garden Operations, Sept. 4th.

Red Clover in the Orchard (Red Clover). —I do not consider red clover a good thing to sow in the orchard. If your object is to grow it for ploughing down, it is too slow of growth. Other things are better, such as oats, vetches, etc., which make a better green manure, as they grow quicker, and will supply more nutriment to the soil. Again, if the clover is to be grown so that it may be cut at intervals, it la bad, for when the plants get time to get strong they will take too much out of tho soil. Recollect that every time you cut you are taking materials away without returning anything to the soil. The best thing for you to sow in the orchard is perennial rye grass. The best time to sow such is in April; but if you have sot your soil broken up, you could sow at once, and with a good spring it would be a success
