RIDING WORK AT ELLERSLIE.
(To the Sporting Editor.)
Sir, —Ab an owner and troquenb visitor to the Elleralie race track, will you kindly allow me space through your columns to draw the attention of the powers that ba of the A.R.C. to a dangerous custom at present prevalent amongst the boys who ride on the track. I refer to the want of a rulo in passing. For instance, some are doing slow work, others fast. Those riding fast work never know for certain which aide to pass on, as sometimes those in front pull 10 the inside and sometimes outside, thus making it uncertain for those coming fast behind which Bide to pull to. I have witnessed several narrow escapes of serious accidents and frequent cases of nasty bumping, almost taking a horse ot! his legs; I would suggest that it be made a rule (posted up in a prominent place) that all riders pull to the intide of the track, allowing those wishing to pass to do so on tbe outside. Such a rule would minimise the chances of accident), and the loss perhaps of life and valuable property which I feel sure it will be your unpleasant duty to record sooner or later unless some reform to the present eyßtem of working is adopted. The fact is tho tan track, which is bha only one available at present, is altogether too small for tho large number of horses working at Ellerelie. Hoping the authorities will see their way to do something in this matter.—l am, etc., Sport.
