BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Board of Education was held to-day. when there were present :—Mr S. Luke (Chairman), and Messrs A. R. Harris, J. Muir, R. Udy, R. Hobbs, ,T. R. Reed and J. H. Wright.

Election of Member.—The Chairman reported thab Augusb 31st had been fixed as the day for the election of a member of the Board to till the vacancy caused by the death of Mr W. Woodward. So tar, Mr L. J. Bagnall has been nominated by 55 school committees, and Mr J. Hastie by 25 committees.

Resignation. — The Chairman in his reporb stated that he had received the resignation of Mrs E. Gibson, teacher ab Ruapuke School.

Assistant Teachers' Salaries. — The following report was submitted by the Committee of the whole Board, which meß yesterday to consider the salaries of assistant teachers :—" (1) Your Commibtee report bhab they havo considered the question referred to thorn, together with a communication theroon from tho Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute. Your Committee have under consideration various proposals for tha alteration of the scale adopted by the Board in October and November, 1896, bub are not yeb prepared to make any recommendation thereon. (2) In the meantime your Committee have examined the several applications (25 in number) referred to them, and recommend the following increases :—Mr G. H. Plummer, Richmond Road, from £130' to £140; Mr S. H. Ferguson, relieving, Nelson-street, £70 to £80 ; Miss E. Shrewsbury, fifth assistant, Wellesley-streeb, £90 to £95 ; Miss H. J. Priestly, first assistant, Avondale, £90 to £95; Miss E. S. Bull, second assistant, Onehunga, £80 to £90 ; Mies E. M. Rsvibb, fifth assistant, Parnell, £50 to £G0 ; Miss F. M. Smith, relieving, Ellorslie, £50 to £60. And your Committee recommend that the remaining applications be declined for the presenb."—'f h9 report was adopbed.

Selection of Teachers.—The Teachers* Selection Committee's reporb was read as follows :— " Your Committee recommend that the following appointments should be authorised by the Board : Mr H. M. Thompson to be teacher of To Rau-a-Moa school (Pirongia); Mr M. Priestley to be teacher of the Kimihia school; Mr C. Wilson to be teacher atTangaihi; Mr P. J. Mullins to be teacher at Tairua Block ; Miss A. J. Cunningham to be teacher ab Ngahinepouri; Mr R. 11. Patterson to bo firsb assisbanb ab Nelson-street; Miss J. Morison to be assistant ab Kihikihi ; Miss E. M. Renshaw bo be fourth assistant ab Kauaeranga Boys' School ; Mr J. S. Doull, pupil-teacher to Welleeley-streeb School; Miss E. M. Ashman, to be fifth assistant at Kauaeranga Boys' School ; Mr H. J. Wooller, pupil teacher, to Grafton Road ; Mr J. H. Hill, pupil teacher, to Kaukapakapa ; Mr J. G. (2) Your Committee cannot recommend the,, request of the Grafton School Committee to be furnished with the names of all applicants for the position of head teacher of the 'school, with testimonials' a*J(. reports. (3) Your Committee submib a recommendation from the Howick School Committee, together with a memorial signed by 54 residents in favour of Mr A. W. B. Davis aa head teacher, and recommend thab the same be declined, and thab bhe Committee be consulted as to the appointment of Mr Bishop. (Mr Luke dissented.) (4) Your Committee recommend thab Mr A. W. B. Davis be allowed to refuse bhe appointmenb of teacher of tokaboka No. 1 School, for which he has been selected, on the recommendation of the School Committee. (5) Your Committee recommend that committees be consulted in regard to proposed appointments as follows :—Tokatoka No. 1, Mr A, H.-W. Thompson; Kaitara, Miss J. A. Fraser and Miss M. A. Field ; Pukeabua, Mr A. W. B. Davis and Mr A. -N. Bowden ; Fairburn's Road, Mr J. Cahill; Paeroa (second assistant), Miss F. Masetield ; Port Alberb (assistant), Miss J.E. Hefford ; Kohukohu (assistant), Miss F. M. Harris ; Horahoia (assistant), Miss C. M. Upton; Newton Ea.b (seventh assistant). Miss A. M. Caldwell. (6) 'Sour Committee recommend that the Parnell School Committee be informed in answer to • their inquiry that there is no standard grade for tho position of second assistant master in a town school, and thab teachers classified D 4 havo been recently appointed to such positions."—The reporb was adopted.

Jubilee Memorials. — Certain correspondence was read with regard to bhe signing of the school children's address to the Queen, and the collection of subscriptions in the school for the proposed abatua of bhe Queen. The Mewton Schools Committee and Ponsonby School Committee wrote objecting bo the school children being canvassed or solicited for •übecripbions. Ib waa decided bo take no farther action regarding the collecting of subscriptions, and to refer various communications •re the statue funds to the Statue Committee.

Grafton School,—A deputation of the Grafton School Committee waited on the Board with reference bo the appointmenb of the headmaster of the Grafton Road School. Mr Clarke (Chairman) was the principal speaker, and he and the other members of the Committee urged on the Board the claims of Mr Hill, ab present assistant at the school, bo be included*, in tho names sent to the Committee for bhe selection of a headmaster.—After some discussion tho Board decided to reply that the matter had already been dealt with ia the report of the Teachers' Selection Committee.
