Melbourne, this day. A sensational seizure of a ship by Customs officers occurred yesterday in the Victoria dock, when the Norwegian ship Phoß, 1,587 tons, jusb arrived from Hamburg, Wtts being searched.
Tho case soon developed inbo ono of serious magnitude. A great quantity of spirits and tobacco was found concealed all over the vessel.
In Ihe pantries, bins, and under the top dressing of the floor were found some two hundred bottles of brandy and whisky and some tobacco.
A large water tank was packed with bottles of spirits.
A large box of provisions was found in the store with spirits and tobacco underneath a layer of potatoes.
The saloon contained a couple of cabinets in a corner, and behind were piles of match boxes packed with tobacco and cigars.
In the captain's quarters there were also found various places of concealment, ingenious walls, pannclled and covered with looking glasses, and behind these were large receptacles filled with bottles of spirits.
The chief officer's cabin had Bimilar plants between tho panels and the ship's side.
Six lorry loads' wore removed, and there are still several loads to be carried away.
Captain Johnson, master of tho Plios, explains that the goods undeclared were intended for a friend engaged in the copra trade at the Islands.
