The " New York Times " seems to have found a mare's r_esi in stating thab the Briti<*h Government had recently annexed bhe Islands of Palmyra, the iacb being that tho British flag was hoisted over them some nine years ago. Tho chief value of the islands is as a naval strategical base. Instead of being situated, as might have been inferred- from the telegrams, within a few hours steam of Honolulu, they are to reality lOdeg. south of it, being m lat. sdeg. SOmin N. and long. 162deg. 23min VI. ihe Palmyra Islandsare nearly midway between . Samoa and Honolulu, and some 300 miles ; eastward of the main ocean steam route bebween Auckland and Hawaii. iMßiflg Island, annexed some time ago by tne British Governmont, and regarded as a suitable intermediate terminus for a transPacific cable bebweenCanada and Austra m, is a few days' steam eastward of mm Palmyras. The latter are more dots on bhe map, and are a patch of islands in whab are known as the Central Polynesian Group. Geographically they■are" insignificant that no explorer has deemed it worth while to furnish any length* description of them, butib will be seen at. glance that their position renders then valuable for naval purposes. A Customs statement shows in part th< extenb of tho fisheries in Foveaux Strain about which soma discussion is at preien. going on. Up till the 30th June of tnu year 6,853 cwb of frozen tub was sent be Australia, valued ab £9,257. Victor., taking 6.441 cwb!
