FIRE IN SYLONDS-STREET.

WINSTONE BROS.' ST-ABLES BURNT,

A fire broke oub lasb night in Winstone Bros.' stablee, equated at the top of Symonds-sbroob. Tho alarm was given about ton o'clock by a young man named Thoa. Watts, who telephoned from an adjoining house to the Alberl-etrccb and Grafton Fire Brigade station*. Constable liinton, of the Edun Terraco police station, also discovered tho lire about the come tiroe, and a number of Mossr* Winstone'a employuos, who lived by woro quickly summoned. Tho firo was found to be in tho upper storey, and the horses in tlio stills below were got out without much trouble, togothor with all tho harness. Meln while, the brafton and Karangahnpo %iro Brigades had arrived, followed by ti.o Auckland Brigade under Superintendent Jlughop, and tho Salvage Corpa under Captnin Field. The hoses were set to work in front an-'i rear of tho building, and in nb;m6 an hour'n time tho flames woro extinguished, though nob beforo the whoio of tho upper storey, containing machinery, harness, faed, and a quantity of storod furniture, waa gutted. Tho ground floor waa damaged very little by tho fire. The origin of thenreisunknown. When the foreman, Mr Hector Aikenhead, left the building at 5.30 p.m., everything was ri&ihi, and thore \rt\* not a fraca of fire when Mr E. Winstone passed the buildings on hU wuy honn tib 9 p.m. A strong detachment of police under Sergeants Clarke, Kelly and Lyons wcrn in attendance, and rendered assistance by keeping back the large crowd which • speedily gathered to watch the bluxj. The building was insured for £1,000 in the New Zealand Insurance Company, tha ImrncHf, stock maohinorj, etc., fcr £300, anil the furnituro, of which there vva? a largo amount stored, for £300 also in the New Zealand. Tho full amount of tho damages has nob yet been estimated, bub will be considerably over tho insurance.
