THE IMPERIAL INSTITUTE.
A DISTINGUISHED GATHERING.
SPEECH BY MR CHAMBERLAIN.
London, April 1. The annual banquet of the Colonial Institute was a distinguished gathering. Those present included the Duke of Cambridge, the Marquia of Lome, Lord Onslow, Lord Ranfurly, the Earl of Kintore, Sir flonry Loch, Milner Brassev, Sir William Robinson and the Agents General.
Mr Chamberlain presided. Responding to the toast of the Navy, Lord Chas. Bercaford advocated the formation of a colonial reserve trained on modern warships in modern gunnery.
Mr Chamberlain, in proposing the toast of the Colonial Institute, said the sentiment of kinship was spreading throughout the Empire. Great progress was being made in the promotion ot firm union, and Imperial federation must eventually result as a universal racial desire, and would give expression to the dearesb wich of colonists. Possibly, some day Britain would be surpassed by sister nations ; meanwhile, it was their duty to keep alive the' torch of Imperial patriotism. His only ambition was to promote closer unity. His speech was loudly cheered, and is applauded by the newspapers.
