VOLUNTEER NEWS.
M ajor Banks assumes command of tho I Auckland district of volunteers from to-! morrow.with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Major Banks served as a subaltern in the 2nd Battalion 24th F/oob nearly eight years. He was then transferred to the 12th Royal Lancers, in which regiment he waa appointed Adjutant, and held that appointment five and a-half years, when he was promoted Captain of 7th Dragoon Guards, and Major of 7bh Dragoon Guarda in 1885. Major Banka took part as a captain with tbe 7th Dragoon Guards in bhe Egypbian Campaign of 1882, where he had his horao shob under him in acbion, and received for hia services in this campaign bhe order of the Medjidie 4bh Class silver medal and bronze ebar. During tbe latter part of hia service he hed'the appointment of Commandant of bhe Kasaulie Hill Dep6b, Punjab, India, and has alao -ield obher staff and regimental appoinbmenbs during his service.
