BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Tns ordinary mooting of the Auckland Bi>ard of Education was held to-day, when there wore present Messrs J. Muir (Chair ' man), Lam- 1., S. Luke, Woodward and the Roy. .J. 'B .'.-■-■.

Mk WgRTKiXGTO!*.—-In the reporb of the Chairman it \v_.- stated that tbe resignation Cf M'r H. Wortbington, of the Wellesiey street school, had been received. The Chairman eaid they would all regret Mr WnrthingtonV resignation. Mr Worthing: on had m.'S- worthily occupied tho position of premier teacher in the district for many years. How many people he had educated and fitted tor life it would bo impossible to say. Mr Worthington had literally broken dowifin the service of the Boaru, under the strain which the duties of a lart>e school entailed on him, and he (the Chairman) was sure he voiced the ; sentiments of tho whole Board in regretting that Mr Worthing.on should have been ebliyei to resign the position he had so wonhiiy filled. He moved, "That this Board accept tho resignation with regret-, and record it_e_ scn?e of Mr Worthingtoii. long andeffident service." Other mem bers of tlie Board spoke to similar elleet, Mr Luke, as che oldest member of the Board, expre*_iug deep regret at. Mr Worthißgton'e retirement, while Mr Lambe eaid that he was a born teacher, and was a loss to tho service. —Mr Bate, said he had always felt admiration lor Mr Worthington for the thoroughness with which he did his work. —Tii_ motion wa* carried unanimously.

Chairman's Report.—The Chairman in hi* report stated that he had authorised the acceptance of the lowest tender, Reynoil and Bennett, £469, for additions to the Chapel-street .School, sis recommended by tho Committee. The following resignations hud bt.on received, in addition to Mr Worthingi.nn _ : —Mrs E. Rooney, relieving teacher, Wellosley street- School ; Mr D. W. Murray, Tunaiteruria and Tangihua ; Mr F. S. Harding, teacher, Little Omaha; Miss F. Taylor, teacher, Puma No. 1 School ; Miss C. A. hopper, assistant teacher, Newton East School ; Mr F. A. Clarke, pupil teacher, Waiokaraka ; Mr B. C. Housley, pupil teacher, Hamilton West; Mr H. T. Gibson, assistant teacher, Opotiki; Mia* E. L. Alexander, assistant, Totara North School; Mr E. J. Banks, pupil teacher, Tauranga No. 1 School; Miss N. E. Ockenden, pupil teacher, Onehunga School.—The reporb waß adopted. A resolution was paesed, on the motion of Mr Woodward, regretting Mrs Rooney 8 resignation.

Sklection of Teachers.—The reporb of the Teachers' Selection Committee stated that the Committee recommended various appointments of teachers, 59 in all, to be made by the Board. Theae included the appointment of Mr J. H. Gillies to be head teacher of tho Puhoi School, Mr H. Carse to be teacher of the Maungatapere School, Mr T. Read to Okaihau No. 1 School, Mr F. D, Woods to be teacher of Te Aroha West School, Miss A. •M. Beale to be teacher of No. 1 School, Miss B. A. Russell to Rangiriii School, Mies A. S. Hamlin to Waiwera Springs School, Miss S. K. Niccol to Omaha School, Miss J. F. Davis to Pukeumu, Miss B. H. Keene to Waipu Cove. The Committee also recommended that live qualified mate candidates «nd ten qualified female candidates be employed as pupil teachers on probation from February Ist.— Tho report was adopted.
