NEWMARKET.

The ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borouch Council was held last evening. Preeeul: Mr J. M. Laxon (Mayor), Crs. Lee, Spooner, Angus, Why man, Mc Coll, Laurie. Edgerley and Lumpkin, lie a nuisance in Bourko-street, cr. Whyman reported thab there was no place where they could drain away the water thab flowed on to the street, even though they laid drains to the residences, excepb at a very heavy cost, which they could nob afford. ONEHUNGA. The ueual meeting of bhe Onehunga Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present: Mr li. A. .Sutherland (the Mayor),, Messrs Col lea ge, McKenzie, Burden, Rowe, Hill, Patten, Lakiug, and Dunwoodie. Anglican Cemetery. — A lobter was received from Canon Haselden stating that bhe following resolution had been carried ab a recent meebing of the vestry of Saint Peter's Anglican Church, viz.: "That in bbc opinion of the vestry bhe bime has fully arrived when the burial ground attached to Sb. Peter's Church, situated in Queenstreet, Onehuuga, should be closed." On the motion of the. Mayor the letter waa referred to tho Council in Committee bo considor andreDort. Suburban Water Supply.—The Mayor stated thab ab the receob u&oeting held ab Nowmarkob to consider tho question of water aupply, the adjacent boroughs had agreed to take the water ab the price asked by tha Onehunga Borough Council for 40 yeara or upwards, subject to an agreement that if necessary ihe terms be readjusted by arbitration at the end of 20 years. He moved bhab tho offer of the delegates of the outeide boroughs be accepted. The resolution was csrriod by seven to two. The Council alao decided thab the water inspector be insbructed to make an inspection of tho water-taps within the borough." Public Library.—A letter was received from Mr J. D. Jackson on behalf of the Library Committee atating bhab they ware willing to hand overtho Public Library to she Council, if they would take charge of it. for bhe use and benefit of the inhabitants of Onehunga.—Mr Laking stated thab he had been asked to explain to the Council thab bhe Committeo were anxious bhat ihe books should be preserved for the use of the public, to form the nucleus of a library for the burgesses at some future date. He moved that the books be removed from the present building mid hold in truab for the general public-Mr Dunwoodie eueges.ed that their solicitor should bo consulted to ascertain thoir real position in tiie matter, but after some discuse-ion, the original motion was carried.—On the motion of Mr Colledgo, seconded by Mr Burden, it was resolved that the recommendation of the Coußcil-in Committee that the salary of bhe Town Clerk be increased by £20 pur annum, be adopted.
