ROBBERY OF GOLD.
£5,000 STOLEN FROM THB OCEANA
Melbourne, January 24. There was great excitement in bhe city yesterday afternoon when ib leaked oub bhat five thousand sovereigns had been stolen irom the strongroom of the Oceana, which waa ready to sail for Home. Ib appears thab on Friday two hundred and ninety bhousand pouuds was stowod in the strongroom, and yesterday an addibional fifbythree bhousaud was broughb aboard. Ib waa then discovered thab bhe door of bhe strongroom had boen broken open, and a box containing five thousand sovereigns, shipped ab Sydney, was missing. The box contained five smaller boxes of a thousand each, and had been broken opou to allow of the easy removal of tho smaller boxes. The steamer has been detained, bub there is
no clue.
