REVENUE RETURNS.
A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE.

Wellington, this day. The public accounts for the December quarter have just been gazetted. The revenue is as follows: —Customs, £480,242 ; stamps, £176,172 ; post and telegraph, £18,856; land and income tax, £267,924; beer duty, £20,235; railways, £316,442; registration and other feo?, £7,117 ; marina, £5.63S ; miscellaneous, £12,032 ; territorial £52,892: total, £1,357,050; being an increase as compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous year of £140,539. The chief items showing increases are : Customs, stamps, post and telegraphic, beor duty, railways and territorial.
The revenue for the nine months ended 31sb December, 1596. was £2,288.814, and for the nine months ending 3lsb December 1895, £2.025.219; increase of 1896 over 1895, £263,595.
The public accounts made up from Ist January,lS96 to 31sb Dacembor, 1896, show the following receipts : — Customs £1,767,151; stamps, £652,957 ; posb and telegraph, £65,038; land tax, £274,372; income tax. £93,370; property tax, £4 • beer duty, £67,814; railway?, £1,262,320; regisbrabion a»d other fees, £51,053; marine, £20,736 ; miscellaneous, £79,462 • territorial revenue, £295,267 : total £4,652,345. Total for the year 1895, £4,311,382: increase 1896 over 1895* £350,963.
