AUCKLAND EXHIBITION.

The official opening of the Auckland Industrial Exhibition took place on Dec. 24th at the Exhibition Buildings, Drill Hall, the ex-Mayor, Mr J. J. Holland, JIH.R., performing tbe inaugural ceremony end delivering ft suibablo address. The Drill Hall and surroundings presented a very busy and novel appearance, the whole place being transformed from its usual appearance. For many weeks paat those connected with the promotion of the exhibition had been working hard in making arrangements for it, in re-modelling the interior of the building and constructing, annexes, and the scene at the opening showed that a great deal of care and trouble had been bestowed on the preliminary arrangements. The Exhibition waa a private venture and purely an industrial ono. The industries represented in the exhibition were varied and numerous. Those .town in the buildings included carriage making, arb furniture, confectionery, tobacco making, stoves and ranges, billiard tables, fancy goods, drugs and chemicals, electrical machines, pianos, flour and biscuit making, wines, beers and spirits, cycles, gun making, photography, paintings, wood carving, etc. Amongst tbe miscellaneous exhibits of interest were the Rontgen X rays, carioa from the South Sea Islands and elsewhere, and the cineomatoeraph.

Oa December 30th the ales and stout ■in the exhibition were judged by Messrs Alex. M. Slurtrie and John M. Morran. They gave their awards aa follows :—R. Secoombe and Son : Stoub, draught and bottled, Ist prizes; ale, draughb, special Ist; XXXXXX (special brew), special Ist; bottled ale, special Ist. Hawera Brewery (Clarke): Stout, bottled, special Ist prize; ale, draughb, let. The following further awards have been allotted:—Port wine: Glen Var Wine Company, first; Messrs Wondel and Co., lecond. Clareb: Glen Var Wine Company, special first. Sherry: Messrs Wendel and Co., first. Cider; Messrs Wendel and Co., apecial first. Madeira : Glen Var Wine Company, first. Ofcamaruru Native School Writing competition—Preparatory class : Jane Hoani, 1; Bertha Kerewa, 2; Eva Hohapata, highly commended. Standard I l Henry Hira, 1; Mihako Rabahi, 2 ; Bryan Maura, 3; Wynyard Hunia, highly commended. Standard II.: Awa Raiahi, l;Atarau Hoera, 2; Noihaore Hohapata, 3; Mac Hona and Tarahotu Ratahi, highly commended. Artistic hair work: i adame Nielsen, special gold award ; Madame Lloyd, first. Novelties ia hair work: Madame Nielsen, special gold sward; Madame Lloyd, first. Messrs J. f. Syms and J. L. Middleton acted as Judges. BtOvesandrangas: Mr J. Broady, special gold award ; Mews Luke and Son, sjehly commended. The judges were •Wee_sT. Maaefield and Dunvvoodie. Mr .hrensexhibit of German Bausages, etc., gained a special firsb, and gold awards fi&vebeen won by Messrs W. Basts and J. *eil for wood-carving and gum-turning respectively. A special gold medal was awarded to Madame Doife* for a fine exhibition of oil painbings, including large pictures of bhe Queen, Lord Wolseley, Lord Tennyson and other eminent} people. A wood-chopping contest took place on Jan. 6, tbe winner being John Beale, a native of England, residing at the Tbameß, who secured the firs* pri?e cd £5. His time was Bmin 45sec. In tbe elocution competition on January Bth Walter Moore won firsb prize gold, medal ami Mis? Olive May Stokes second, silver medal. Master Lorking, Mr A. Martin and Miss Evelyn Bullen highly commended. Mr Moore secured second prize at the late elocution competition In Wellington. On January 11 a singing competion took place in the coneerb ball. Mr Morton Prior won the firsb prize, Mr Gerald Shaw second and Mr J. Pebherick third. Competition for pianoforte playing: —Adults Class ; Miss Qhadlield, J; Miss Lew, 2. Junior Class : Miss Mary Cooper, 1; Miss Thorne, 2. The Misse& Warner acted as judges ab the children's flower show on January 13. Hand-bouquet: Alice Morbyne, 1; James Farnall, 2 ; William Hawkins, highly commended. Table bouquet: Boris Grey, 1 , Arbhur Tomlinson, 2; Essie Malone, highly commended.
