DEATH OF HON. DR. POLLEN.

One of the earliest settlers in the Auckland district passed away at nine o'clock this morning at hia residence, Avondale, in the person of Dr. Daniel Pollen, member of the Legislative Council, at the advanced age of 82' yeara. Deceased had been suffering from diarrhoea for five days, which confined him to his bed. Dr. Roberton waa called in to see him yesterday. He was then very weak, and although apparently better, aban early hour this^norninghe gradually became weaker and died as stated. Deceased leaves a widow and four sons and four daughters, all being grown up. Dr. Hugh Pollen, a popular medico of Wellington, ia a eon ot deceased.

Deceased arrived at the Bay ef Islands in the year 1840, In the early days be held a position in the Civil Service, and subsequently he was appointed a member of the Legislative Council. He was a member of the second Fox Ministry, without portfolio, from July, 1861. to August, 1862, and of the second Stafford Government from June, 1868, to June, 1869. Having been re-appoinbed to bhe Legislative Council in 1873, he was Premier and Colonial Secretary of the colony from July, 1875, to February, 1876, when he took office under Sir Julius Vogel aa Colonial Secretary, and held the post under that gentleman and Major Atkinson till October, 1877. H6 was also Minister of Native Affairs from December, 1876, bill he retired with his colleagues in October, 1877. In the old days of provincialism deceased held the office of General Government Agent in Auckland. He was a man of great ability, but he did not identify himself with public affairs outside of policies. However, he established brick works at Avondale and waa also Chairman of tho East Coast Native Land Settlement Company. Deceased was in enjoyment of a Government pension up to the time of his death. • , •

The remains of deceased will be intaned in the Avondale cemetery on Wednesday next at three o'clock.
