At the meeting of the City Council yea terday the City Valuer submitted his annual return, showing the assessment valuations of rateable property for the year 1896 97. The total valuations of the various wards amounted to £304,013, as against £298,019 for the previous year, an Increase of £5,994. The return also showed thab 60 new buildings had been erected in the city during the year, and eleven had been burnt or removed, leaving a gain of 49.
