Awitu, Wednesday-
The Orua Bay School (Coulthard's) was opened on Monday last, Mips Maxwell MeGee having been appointed fcencher. The school Rupplies a long felt want;, and great credit is due to Mr S. Coultbard and tubscriberß for the earnestness? they have shown in their endeavour to brinp the tnntter to a Bucceseful ieauo, finding as they have done all necessary material for the building. The Heads school ia increasing in numbsra under the able tuition of Misa F. Melsop. The Awitu Road Board are about) to carry out some very necesßary work on the road 3 throughout the district. Tenders are out for road formations, cutti<)£3, and channellings, Ib is hoped the Board will see thab part of fche road running to the wharf through Mr John Garland's property, B8 far as the junction of Well's Road, is repaired.
Accidents seem rather prolific jusb now about Awitu. On Friday evening lasb, Mr Greenland, Posbmaeter ab Awitu Central, in endeavouring; to shoob a haro, narrowly escaped shooting or blowing his own head off, owing to the bursting of his gun (a muzzle loader), at the breech. He escaped by a miracle, the barrel being left in his lofc hand, whilafc tho stock remained irt his right. Beyond a good scare no harm was done.
Itain i 9 eadly wanted, and crops are being ruined through drought. Turnips (Swedes) are spoilt, and grass greatly injured; Pumpkins and melons wilt be scarce this season.
