An ingenious electric burglar alarm has been patented by Mr M. McDermotc, plumber and tinsmith, Vict.oria-atreeb Easb. The alarm, which consists of an olectr.ic bell, can be connected with any window, door, or safe by means of wires, and on anyone tampering with any object connected with the alarm it goes on ringing until 6topped by those who understand its ■working. Any attempt to tamper with or cut the wires will etarb the bell ringing, and it will continue to ring no matter whether the wires are severed or not. The apparatus appoara to be a thoroughly reliable burglar alarm, and fulfils what ib is intended for, but ib can also be ueed as a call bell in the daytime. Several persons under whose notice the invention has been brought, havedecidodtohavet.beirestablishment3 fitted up with it. Mr McDermotb has just returned from Wellington, where he has submitted to the inspection of Ministers a model of the machine with a view of having ib fibted up ab the railway stations. Ho also brought it under the notice of the police authorities while in Wellington.

The ordinary meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held lasb evening ab Zion Hill, Birkenhead. Mr J. J.
