AUCKLAND RACING CLUB SUMMER MEETING.

Mr Evett's handicaps for the minor evenb 8 oi tha A.R. U. Boxing Day programme, contain a Dumber of errors, bub it would take up too much space to deal with them. A badly treated one in the Pony Cup is Haze], mere with lOnb 3ib, and ib will baa surprise to me if her owner accepts. Sb. Regal ie favourably handicapped in both the Tria' Handicap, sovan furlonga, and Christmas Handicap, one mile and a-quarter. In the Hurdfo Race, Pansy, Levanter, and the Woafc Coast horse Dante read a likely brio. 'JJhe Ift3t named is by Sou'wester, and won tbo two hurdle races at the recenbFeilding messing. The Dunedin riliy Sb. Ouida is niceiy treated in the Nursery Handicap, and Forma should stand an excellent chance of winning tbo Railway Handicap. These are first impressions of the handicaps. With regard to the Auckland Cup the issue is open. St. Hippo has done on the track all chat ha 3 been asked him ; still, in the opinion of many of those who have bean on the course lately, he is nob bho Sb, Hippo he was when he pulled off the Auckland Cup of 1892. However, he would not recjuirs to be in the same trim to beat the very moderate opposition he will have ia the race to-morrow week. Id is agreed oh all sides tbab no horse at Ellerslie appears more sound just now than St. Hippo. Impulse is also standing the work allotted him, bub the touts have a hard bask on hand to get a real line as to hia prospects for the gelding ia always worked alone. Pegasus is reported bo look none too well, and I am afraid Major George's horao baa little ehanco of euccosa. The lightly weighted Quiltiri is in great fig, and hB shaped well in solid work apportioned him yesterday morning. I have ib from the South that the gelding answered satisfactorily a queabion that was pub to bim by 3iia trainer us bo whether he could stay the distance before leaving home. He scored a decent performance when he defeated Bloodshot in the Hawke's Bay Guineas, and we musts nos overlook his win in the Grand Stand Handicap on the concluding day of the recent Dun«diu Spring Meeting. If compelled to M&me one ab tho present stage bo win the Auckland Cup of 1895,1. would say Quiltiri. The Possible is to be' ridden in the race by B. Dawes.

The Steeplechase bears a more open appearance with Roscius not likely to see the po?b. Tiritea is a clas3 above nic local ■contiugenb, but he will have a task eeb him to clafeaU Fishmonger, Bombardier and Levanter. Fishmonger is bowling along In £>roab nbyle on the traiaing track, and the consistent! old fellow is sure to run well. Bombardier's chance of success depends upon him gabbing over the obstacles, bub ha is a horao I am tired of trusting. Probably Fishmonger or Tiritoa may win. PAST AUCKLAND CUFS." ) T.ho Srsb Auckland Cup, two mile?, run uncer the auspices of the present Racing Club, was won by Mr R. Pw-vy'a Templeton on Boxing Day, December 26bh, 1874. He carried the lmposb of Bsb 111b, but there wore only two other utarters, viz., Mr J Watba" Toi (6at 81b), subsequently daci of Kingasfe, and Mr W. Walters' Yabterino (9ab). J- *vatbie rode Templeton, who was a great; favourite in those days, for he was one of Traducer's greatest sons, ofd ysttedna since gave the turf Libeller, Matchlock, Kingtish, and Leorina. The year 1876 saw the Jate Mr W. Walters popular colours to the fore on Dainty Ariel and Fanny Fisher's well-performed eon. King Fisher; H. Redwood's GuyFawkes (S»t 81b), being eecond; and Toi third. At, ti'ia period Guy Fawkes was a noted racer. In J877 two Cups were run, the first, being on the Ist January.when Mr J Watt's Ariel (by Dainty Ariel-Una). who was a big favourite, gob home, the other places being filled by Mr B. Ray a Saoebiry. and Mr W. Walter's Issak Walton. Belie and Don also ran. On the 27ih December, ab the end of the s »m» year, Mr F. Bolton's five-year-old L»r» got home in front of Elsa and Venus Traoeit, aad the two following years, 1878 and 1879, Ariel again triumphed — on the necond occasion carrying the colours of tbab «ood old local sport, Mr M. Edgar, who Rtiil lovea to enthuse on bhe victories of hta Let Ariel, who, by-thobye, only died in tha Hawke'a Bay province the other day. In Law's year the field was wretchedly teak. From 1874 till 1877 (New Year's Day) the distance of the Cup was fewo wires, and from Lara'a Cup in the B ame year bill 1837, 1\ miles, when, ib was again" reduced to two miles. In IbSU, Mr H P. Lance's Foul Flay (Bsb 121b), and ridden by Derritt, gained the verdict from the A«ckland-owned Maid of HoD?» r <Bince dam of Freedom) and^ Ariel. Liboliar and King Quail started in this a-aca and the contest was remarkable for the death of the jockey Nolan, who was riding Libeller. Foul Play went out with odds of 6t04 on him. This race was Ariel's fifth Auckland Cnp. In 1881, Mr S. T. Hora'all's King Quail fbv Yattendon

—Qnail) secured a' victory. Among the Beld was Fitzhercules, old Rewi, and Mr G. Bates Hilda (a Wellingtoa Cup winner). The year 1882 saw Mr / Filbrow'Tthree-year-old colh Welcome Jack romp home to the delight of the Southern division, and ho ran the 2J miles in 4min 7i ß ec, which was the fastest time recorded in the race np to thai time. The late Mr R. H. Variances Salvage (by Castaway-Mist), m?-!L Won forthe foreigners in 1383, Tim VVhifflar and Libeller filling the other places, while in the rear division was Welcome Jack. Many Aucklanders will remamber thab year's contest with anything bob feelings of pleasure. Salvage started favourite at 6 to 4 against, the totalisator dividend being £2 10a. In the year 1884 the weather was wet and the couvbo heavy. _ Mr P. F. Tancred'a roan horse Administrator was served up a great " pob,'^ and started at 5 to 4 on in a field of cix, Libeller being among the number. The winner turned up iv Mr G. Bates' gelding The Poet, who won easily by four lengths from the New Plymouth-owned Normanby, with Musket's handsome daughter Woodnymph third. The year 1885 saw the five-year-old Nelson eurpriee the spectators at large by simply galloping over his opponents at the finish, and pubting up a 2\ mi!a record, compassing the distance in 4min. The game Waitiri and Victoria were the other placegettera, and among the field wereTasman, Wboneyhurpt, Necklace, Tetford, Turquoise and Foul Shob, a Great Northern Derby winner. This year the added money of the Cup was 1,00030v5, and probably ib attractod the strongest field thab has gone to the post in the history of the race. Altogether there were fifteen starters. In 1886 Nelson again triumphed with9acßlbinthesadd]e ; strange to say, Waitiri wac again second, and Clogs' third, Lochiel, Friendship, Victoria and Lady Norah running unplaced. The added money was l.OOOsovs, bub in the year following the stake was reduced to 750sova. Tho race waa run on New Year's Day, when Nelson, carrying 9ab J2ib. again gladdened the hoarb of hia owner and the public at large by winning from Cioga and Sextant and four othor?, the dividends being £112s and £1 10s. In the following year the Cup distance was reduced to two miles, which it has remained at ever since. Lochiel (Ssb 101b), riddan by the late W. Clifford, carried Mr G. G. Stead's yellow jacket to the front. Hilda, then a three-year-old, was second and British Lion third. The two miles was run in 3mia 32-)ee. With 9sb 121b Nplaon ran unplaced, but he blundered on liia knees, and Munton (Sat 7lb) fell near tho turn for home. The year following Leopold scored a popular win for "Mr C. Bereatord,"and in 1890 Crackshoo, 3yrs (Bst 31b), made a name for himself by running the two miles in 3min 30|3ec, Hildfl being second and Cissy third. In 1891 the " roee and white stripes " of Mr W. Walters' proved triumphant, with Coalscuttle second, and The Dreamer third. A great three-year-old won the Cup in 1892 in Mr L. D. Nathan'a colb St. Hippo. He. carried Bsb 91b, and carved oub the two miles in bhe splendid time of 3min 3GAs:c, tha fastest yet recorded for the Auckland Cop; in fact the time was bhe record in this colony until Rosefeldt cut it down to 3min 29sec in the New Zaaland Cup of 1893. Brigand (7ab 4lb) finished second to Sb. Hippo, and Merganser (Bst) waa third. Impulse, wibh 7eb 81b, Pinfiro, the winner of the Cup in the previous year, and The Workman, figured among the unplaced division. In 1893, Skirmisher was served up a scorching hob favourite, bub the greatesb outsider of tho eighb starters proved successful. This was Pegasus, who won with 7st 51b in the very Blow time of 3min 39sec, Another outsider in Ids (7»b 41b) finished second, and the fancied Rosefeldlt (Bsb sb) third. Last year's Cup was noticeable for a mare winning, in the consistent Lottie, who carried Bsb. _ Pogasu3, 78b 71b, was second, and Mahaki, 7sb 71b, third, the other starters beings Prime Warden (favourite), Royal Koko, and Forme.
