KATIKATI.
ROADS TO WAIHI.
(from our own correspondent.)
The good people of Kabikabi are alive to the importance of tho Waihi goldfield as their best and only markeb for sale of farm produce, bub alas ! our clay roads are a serious drawback in winter, and from the vastly increasing traffic from Tauranga, and even To Puke, the local bodies are unable to cope wibh bhe difficulty. Bub the Kabikabi settlers place greab confidence in tho Hon. Mr Cadman, and with a view to adopt measures to have our main road to Waihi placed in a passable state of repair for next winter, Mr Percy Stewarb, aa Chairman of the local Road Board, convened a special meeting of thab Board and of bhe ratepayers on Saturday last. The meebing was well attondod, and a series of six resolutions was passed unanimously, with a letter to Mr Cadman, setting forth thab Waihi is the only market for Katikati, and the principal markeb for Tauranga and even Te Puke for sale of farm produce ; thab, in consequence of the extraordinary traffic upon tho northern portion of the main and mail coach road to Waihi, the aaid road was iv many places lasbwintoralmost impassable, and itia feared that those will be nexb winber quite impassable. That bhe greater portion of this extraordinary traffic ia due to the wondorful development of tho Waihi goldfield, producing a considerable revenue to tha adjoining county of Ohinemuri, but no benefit of this nature to the county of Tauranga ; thab as the state of the road involves an increase of fully 50 per cent, upon the cosb of some of bho necessaries of life bo the raining community ab Waihi, and thab the Governmenb are deriving such a large goldfield revenue from thab field, the Hon. the Minister of Mines be asked bo grant tho Tauranga County Council a subsidy of one hundred pounds upon the £ for £ principle, bo be expended on road metal and permamenb repairs. And the Tauranga County Council be requested to subsidise tha amount if granted by the Minister on the terms stated, such subsidy to be provided out ot general revenue and by private subscription and further to solicit their co-operation in the matter.
