INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH.

WELLINGTON V. CANTERBURY

(BY TE_.EGR_.P-I.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

Wellington, thia day. At the close of the day's play Canterbury had scored 169 for their first innings and Wollington team had to their credit 70 for two wickets. Canterbury began aa usual with Cult'and Lawrence, Upham and Ashbolt bowling. The latter was erratic, and only had a few overs. Tho Canterbury captain hit) about in a lively fashion, while his partner contented himself with singles. Fitz.immons replaced Ashbolt, and later on Holdsworth relieved tho fast bowler, and with his fourth ball knocked over Cuffs leg stump : 38—1—27. Ridley had one over before tho adjourning for lunch. Upon resuming both mon settled down to steady batting, and Holdship and Upham were tried wishout effect. Ashbolt was brought on again, and after bitting him to leg for 4 Lawrence jumped oub for a drive and afforded Niven the easiesb possible chnnc6 of stumping, but ho fumbled the ball. The batsman had then made J}l. Upham went on with the wind, and from his first ball Lawrence gave an easy chance to Gore, which that usually line fieldsman dropped. Ab 93 a sixth bowler was tried iv tho shape of Howard, and four runs later the partnership, which had lasted 70 minutes, was broken by Upham bowling Ridley for a carefullyplayed 24. North, after giving one chance, was neatly stumped by Niven, but Wilding and Lawrence set the ecore going again, the latter getting most) of bhe runs. He gave a chance in the long field and put up the ball dangerously high in the slips, and repeating the latter mistake the next over, was held by R. Blacklock. 137 —4 — 66. Though favoured by a considerable amounb of luck Lawrence's babting for a man who had suffered most of all the team from seasickness, was decidedly good. His 66, which occupied him two hours and a-half, included five 4'a and three 3's. After Lawrence lefb, Wilding, who had gone in with orders to play steadily and did so, began to bib freely, and in ono over knocked up 11 off Holdship. At 160 Upham gob rather a plain one by him, and Ashbolt coming on again found easy victims in the tail end. Fowke wenb out by a piece of hard luck, na he waa splendidly caught off a rattling hit that nine times out of ten would have gone to the boundary. The total reached 169, which under the circumstances was respectable. Wellington had little more than an hour's batting, and thia so far has been the reverse of their opponents, beginning badly, and ending well. A. Blacklock, who nearly always scores againsb strange bowling, fell a victim to ihe first ball from Gunthorpe, which was almost a shooter, and Cross, jumping out to a trimmer from Frankish, waa also bowled. Holdship and R. Blacklock, however, shaped better, especially the former, but just as he was well set he had to retire, having strained his side. Gore, who took his place, delighted the spectators by a succession of telling cuts, and was well seconded by Blacklock. At tho drawing of the stumps tho total had advanced to 70 for the loss of two wickets. The game was resumed at half-past ten to-day. Tho scores are as follows :— Canterbury—First Innings.
