The English capital flowing into the colony at the present time apparently is not, all intended for investment in mining operatione. Only a few days ago it woe announced that the Tram Company here had been bought out by an English syndicate, and now conies news that negotiations have been practically completed for the purchase of certain local breweries by Englieh capitalists. These negotiations, it seems, have been going on for some time past through Mr A. D. Douglas, of Auckland, and Mr J. B. Smellie, of London. At present, they have reached a certain detinite point, and are only awaiting the result of a few inquiries, which the agents have every reason to believe will be satisfactory. A cable to that effect wae received yesterday.
The ordinary meeting of the Waste Lands Board was held yesterday, there being present: —Messrs Mueller (in the chair), Bagnall and Lundon. It being pointed out that there wae a possibility of Kold-bearing reefs being discovered on the Tairua Crown Lands, the Board decided not to allow any selection for bomeeteads until December 31st, 18#7 e The question ■of loaees of the petroleum depoeite at Waiotapu was adjourned fora month. It was agreed to inform Messrs Briadney and Co., who applied for a continuance of the timbor floatage license held by them, that) a freeh application would have to be mado, and that all conditions under the Act : of-1884 would have to be strictly complied with. The Board deoided to grant a floatage license on the northern tributaries of the Takau River to Mr J. Christie, the bond to bo £500. With regard to the Opouria Block, it was resolved that eight sections in the northern and southern parts should bo surveyed to ineeb the requirements of farm labourers, but that no priority of selection would be given to the men at present working on the Ruatoko Road.
, The Literary Societies' Union, grand annual competition takes place this evening at the y.M.C.A, Hall, Wollep.ley-street. Groat things are expected of the difforent competitors, and some very close couteets are anticipated. The proceedings commence at 7.30 precisely. « . .
